  • How to Protect Your Skin From Pollution

There are so many perks to living in a big city; bright lights, a diverse population, plenty of places to go. But one big drawback is the pollution. We know it’s not great for our health, but what’s less commonly known is how bad it is for your skin. Free radicals in the air can cause our skin to dry out, and age more quickly. And if you’re not from a big city, it doesn’t mean you’re immune - the fall and winter seasons bring in the wind, which can blow pollutants to even the most remote areas, so make sure to protect yourself no matter where you live.

    What are Free Radicals?

Free radicals are created when the normal, healthy cells that make up our skin become mutated by an outside source. These outside sources are most commonly things like air pollution, cigarette smoke, and UV rays.

    How to Protect Your Skin

Since Free Radicals are often caused by UV Rays, the best way to start is to always use SPF. Make sure to apply a physical sunscreen before going outdoors, and to reapply often if you’re going to be outside for extended periods of time, or if you sweat or are exposed to water. Lips are skin also, so make sure you always have a Lip Balm with SPF on hand to touch up throughout the day.

Another excellent way to keep skin protected is by choosing quality skincare products that contain antioxidants such as plant stem cells, and organic extracts like Green Tea. The best vehicle for antioxidant ingredients is a serum since serums contain higher concentrations of ingredients and are applied to the skin before heavier moisturizers, to create a powerful barrier between skin and pollutants.
