  • How Your Skincare Routine Can Prevent Cancer

    April 06, 2020 2 min read

Your skincare routine is more than just an avenue to beautiful skin. When you are selective and discerning about the products and ingredients you use on your skin, skincare can keep your whole body healthy, steering you clear of cancer-causing and hormone-disrupting chemicals.  From wearing sunscreen to understanding what really goes into your products, we’ve rounded up 3 ways to make sure you are making the right skincare decisions:

    ALWAYS Apply Sunscreen

The holy grail of preventing skin cancer is using sunscreen. A tip we hear time and time again, but it's really an essential.  According to a study conducted by Harvard, sunscreen, when used daily, can reduce the risk of melanoma by 50% and squamous cell carcinoma by 40% compared to those who apply sunscreen irregularly. No matter rain or shine - remember to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen that is at least SPF 30, and reapply every two hours.

Keep An Eye Out For Certain Ingredients

The ingredients in your products matter- be sure to read the labels before you invest. What comes into contact with your skin gets absorbed into your body, and can have an effect on your overall health. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals like phthalates, parabens and BPA can interfere with the body’s hormones, especially reproductive hormones such as estrogen - creating an increase in health risks like breast cancers, chronic diseases, and fertility problems. When stocking up on some of your favorite products, make sure to always read the ingredients lists, and know what’s going into your body.

Don’t Forget Your Lip Balm - WITH an SPF

The thin, delicate skin on our lips is extremely prone to sun damage, and the makeup products we apply to them may make the situation worse. For example, the glossy sheen from a lip gloss attracts sunlight and UV rays, magnifying the negative effects of the sun, thus increasing the risk of skin cancer on the delicate lip area. It is important to apply an SPF filled lip balm or lipstick to treat and protect your pout, your lips are extremely susceptible to sun damage and needs to be treated with extra care.

We want to help you wear your best skin and stay healthy. This is why KAPLAN MD Skincare is certified paraben, phthalate and BPA free, and offers sun-safe products like our Daily Moisture SPF 30 Concentrate, Perfect Pout Lip Balm and Lipstick which contains SPF 30 sunburn protection.
